The NRLCA-Armed Forces Veterans Club is an organization comprised of members of the NRLCA and their families. The AFVC was founded on August 24, 1932 in Baltimore Maryland. Since then, many states across the country have met the minimum requirements to be recognized with a Charter Membership including Illinois.
Membership eligibility is comprised of members of the NRLCA and Auxiliary who served in the armed forces of the United States. Also eligible to join are any member of the NRLCA and their family who believes in the principles of our club, that being the support of our military veterans who served our country. You do not have to be a veteran to join. The purpose of this club is to cooperate with the Board of Control of the NRLCA for the good of the Association and also develop the fraternal spirit among its members.
The AFVC is also responsible for handling of the colors during the annual meeting of the NRLCA. In addition, the club has an annual drawing for national scholarships of $150.00 to help provide funds to eligible students. The number of scholarships drawn is determined each year by the amount of funds available in the AFVC treasury. These scholarships are provided to the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of any member or associate member of the AFVC of the NRLCA who will be attending a college or other post high school program in pursuit of a higher education. Any state that has 100 members and associate members will automatically receive one scholarship recipient draw and one additional scholarship draw for each additional 100 members and associate members to be drawn prior to all the names being placed into the drawing.
The state officers of the Armed Forces Veterans Club (AFVC) would like to thank everyone who through their memberships, donations, time and efforts has made this year’s AFVC fundraising as successful as it was. Our goal is to provide to the children and grandchildren of Illinois Rural Carriers who are members of the AFVC a $100.00 scholarship to help in the costs of their post high school education. We do this through membership and fundraising.
This year we had 114 new and/or renewed memberships. There were many generous cash donations made. One of those donations was gifted in the name of Emily Anderson who passed away from us this last year. Emily was always deeply involved with the AFVC doing whatever she could with raffle donations, etc. to help with student scholarships, she will be missed. We also want to thank Janice Jeremiah for donating the beautiful handmade afghan and unique Tetris cups for the raffle prizes. The 50/50 again was a big hit with six different decks being drawn on.
At one point late in the convention it was announced that we were just short of being able to provide for all the scholarship applications we had received. We proceeded with our tradition of passing “Fuzz’s Hat” for donations around the room. Our National AFVC Vice President, Rick Houston and his wife Julie who had stopped to visit our convention pitched a hand in helping with the collection. With those donations we then had enough funds to provide a scholarship to every applicant. We were also honored when Rick lead the procession of the Retirement of the Colors that signified the closure of our 119th Illinois State convention.

There were 162 applications in the drawing. As Illinois has over 100 AFVC members we received one automatic $150.00 winner. We were then fortunate to have had fifteen additional students’ names drawn with each of those to receive a $150.00 scholarship. Congratulations to all the state and national winners as we wish them the best in their future endeavors.

This year by the close of the state convention we had received 35 scholarship applications. Because of all the generosity for our children and grandchildren, all 35 will be able to receive the $100.00 scholarship. All 35 applications will also be sent to the national AFVC office to be placed in the drawing for a national $150.00 scholarship. Since we have over 100 members, one of our Illinois students will automatically be able to receive a $150.00 scholarship. There are some new government rules we are required abide by. The student will now be required to provide some basic documentation of their enrollment to receive the scholarship. We will mail a letter to the student notifying them they have won the scholarship and what is required of them.
Last year the Illinois AFVC provided 32 state scholarships for a total of $3200.00. There were 36 applications that were submitted by Illinois for the national drawing, we received 22 national scholarship winners for $3300.00, with a total of $6500.00 going to Illinois students! Two of the national winners were late submissions and that were not in the state draw. This goes to show that even if the student’s application is not drawn at the state level they can still go on and win at the national level.
President Ed Lawson, Vice President Stephanie Wallace, and myself, Secretary/Treasurer Allen Ducat would like to thank everyone who has helped support the AFVC and our goal to provide some support for our members children and grandchildren for their higher education goals.
You can become a member of the AFVC at ILRLCA sponsored events such as the Winter Booster and State Convention.
